Three oils in our arsenal are not made from olives, but from nuts. Almond, walnut, and sesame oil are each totally unique. Let's take a look at the details of each variety.Almond oil, like most nut oils is high in healthy monounsaturated fats. These beneficial fats are crucial for cardiovascular and brain health. It has been known for some time that olive oil is one of the most beneficial oils on the market. It's antioxidant content sets it apart entirely from other plant-based oils. The medical community has been long studying its effects on the cardiovascular system. They have found the fatty acid content of olive oil protects blood vessels and platelets and reduces LDL cholesterol. Further research has shown that olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties, benefits the immune system, eyes, skin and nails, and helps our body more effectively absorb vitamins. Now, another healthful benefit to add to the repertoire: olive oil preserves memory and can help prevent Alzheimer's disease! Researchers at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) have made an important discovery. Are you two looking for anything in particular today?" The classic response is that they are on the hunt for olive oil. This is when I begin to point out the different oils we carry. This is also the point in time many customers look a bit bewildered. To make it a bit easier, the 25 different kinds of olive oil we carry can be broken down into three basic categories. The next groups of olive oil take on flavors from the addition of other ingredients. Fused and infused olive oils make up the majority of our oil varieties. This is where everyone gets quite confused. So, what is the difference between the two? How are they made? What do I do with them? These are the common questions to follow my explanation. ...

Refined, Virgin, Extra Virgin... what's the difference? I have always loved olive oil. It was a staple in my mother's house growing up. The mere smell brings back memories of watching her simmer eggs in the morning. She always said to only use extra virgin olive oil. For a time, I bought "extra virgin" purely on my mothers say-so, but my curiosity drove me to look in to where this philosophy came from. Was it just another wives' tale or family tradition? It turns out that mama does know best. The categories refined, virgin, and extra virgin are a clue to the quality and flavor of an oil. Extra virgin olive oil historically has been the most sought after. What is at the pit of all this? It all comes down to how the crop it grown, harvested, processed, and stored. Variances in these factors will lead to difference in over all purity. When it comes to olive oil, quality is everything. Buying inferior oil is a waste of money, and can even be costly to our health. Refined, Virgin, and Extra...
